HOLDING FAMILIES TOGETHER DURING TROUBLED TIMES

Troubled times

Half of you, if you haven’t already, will divorce. 75% of the kids in school in 2000 are in single parent homes.

One out of every 10 of your children, will consider suicide.

One out of six of you is abusing alcohol or some other drug to the point that it is interfering with your family life.

Many of you will suffer a stress-related illness this year.

A few of you will die from these problems far before your time.

For you they may be defined as other things.

Families who cope well in troubled times work to improve these critical success factors.

Communication/listening/openness/honesty

They work at listening, talking openly about needs, problems, feelings and telling the truth.

Time management

Family members are able to carry out their work and school responsibilities and still prioritize individual and family time for health, recreation and just hanging out.

Home management

The home is pleasant, clean and repaired. There is age appropriate but balanced participation.

Financial Management

The family operates on a budget. Each member participates according to their earning power. All are held accountable. Major changes in the budget become material for family discussion and decision-making.

Ability to show affection/attention

Everyone should give and receive attention and affection. Calls, cards, hugs, verbal I love you’s, extras, surprises, time together.

Common interests

Each family needs something they all do together occasionally that each member enjoys.

Parenting

Parents negotiate to agree on the values, rules and style of parenting.

Self care

Hygiene, medical monitoring checkup, medical compliance,

Here’s a formula for holding yourself accountable.

Stay aware of your behavior and how it affects others. Make sure your behavior is congruent with your values. Learn new ways of behaving when yours is not appropriate and practice self-discipline.
